Since January 2023, the Black Resilience Fund has provided 25 households in Multnomah county with a goal to promote resilience and healing for Black Multnomah County residents through a village-building cohort with a 3-year income guarantee. Each cohort member receives between $1,000, $1500, $2,000 a month depending on household size.

COHORT

Twenty-five Black families and individuals living in Multnomah County were selected from an applicant pool of 12,195. A total of 68 people are served through the program.

PLANTING SEEDS OF CHANGE

MONTHLY MEETINGS

Provide support and promote community while focusing on topics such as abundance mindset, community resources, entrepreneurship, and well-being. Average attendance was 12 people per month, ranging from 11 to 18 members. Meeting participants reported increased awareness of, connection to, and optimism in the Black community, as well as financial stability.

GOAL

Promote resilience and healing for Black Multnomah County Residence through a village building cohort with a 3 year income guarantee. By aligning the Income Guaranteed Program goals with its mission, Brown Hope is planting and  nurturing seeds for racial justice and healing in a city that has historically marginalized and oppressed its Black residents.

Economic relief has led to increased engagement with Portland’s Black community and, through renewed involvement, a greater sense of hope and  inspiration.

MEMBER SUCCESS

One cohort member was able to buy a car with program funds. This purchase provided essential transportation as well as a boost in self-condence and feelings of safety. “I have been holding my head a bit higher. It has been nice knowing that I do not have to walk or bus to the places that I need to take my children. I also feel safer.”
